A little ode to the famous fish sandwich fast-food takeout we know and love, but make a healthy version at home with even more flavour!
The Best Frozen Fish for a Perfectly Crisp Texture
Q: Are there any specific brands of frozen fish fillets that work best for making crispy fish sandwiches?
A: High Liner is proudly Canadian and has been around for 125 years now! Having tried many of their products from my childhood all the way into adulthood, I can attest to their battered fish always being perfectly crisp. For this fish sando, I used their English Style Battered Haddock Fillets. I love how light and flakey it is, while still remaining crispy once the sandwich is built.
🐟 Topping Ideas for the Fish Sandwich
Homemade Tartar Sauce: This dill and caper filled tartar sauce is not like your traditional sweet sauce. It’s tangy, creamy, briny and full of texture and flavour – It’s SO SO good. Once you try it, you’ll never go back to store-bought again! Not only is it great in this sandwich but you can also see it here as a classic dip for fish and chips.
Shredded Cabbage: I love adding shredded cabbage for a hint of freshness and crunch. Depending on the mood, I’ll leave the cabbage raw or season it and toss with a fresh squeeze of lime. Thinly sliced iceberg lettuce would be a great substitute if you’d prefer, or you can omit altogether.
Sliced Pickles: Because I can’t pass up the opportunity to add a little more crunch and flavour to the sandwich.
Sliced Cheese: American / cheddar cheese would be a great addition! Something about warm melted cheese in a fish sandwich just hits different.
Easy Side Dishes to Serve with a Fish Sandwich
Very much like the High Liner frozen fish, we’re keeping things easy and simple to make as sides for this delicious lunch!
Chips: Pop open a fresh bag of your favourite crisps and you’re golden!
Fries: A combo that’s even more reminiscent of our favourite fast-food order! While I’m partial to shoe-string fries, any type will work. This combo with the fish sandwich will be a winner for the kiddos.
Coleslaw: If wanting to serve something a little lighter and fresh, coleslaw or any salad will work.
