Oh, yes…You read the title right.
5 items you don’t need in your closet.
Monday morning rolls around and you find yourself sitting in front of a closet full of clothes, yet you have nothing to wear. Does this sound familiar? How can one see or think clearly when our closets are loaded with things that at least 1/4 of it are items that we don’t wear at all!? I speak for many of us when I say that we’re always looking for new items to put in our closets — Whether that be a trendy pair of shoes, a new sweater or some fun accessories. There’s nothing wrong with that, really, but while you’re continuously piling more things in, you have unnecessary items in there taking up space and it can get a little hectic. There is truly no better time for a closet purge like January. So today, I’m sharing my top 5 items you don’t need in your closet.
1. Bras + Underwear
When was the last time you went through your undergarment drawers? How many pairs of underwear and/or bras do you have that are too small, old and are barely holding on by a thread? I know we all have those favorite comfy ones that we couldn’t bear to get rid of… Well, I don’t know about you, but when my undergarments fit nice and look good, I feel good! So please, do yourself a favor and get rid of all those “well-loved” underwear and bras and treat yourself to some fresh ones for the new year. 😉
2. Old tees
Over worn. Stained. That would be the best way to describe those tees. I’m a sucker for white tees, but I find myself owning a ridiculous amount of them yet I only wear the same 2-3. Yes, I have all the shame and I’m totally guilty. It’s time to let go and purge! Although I do like to keep a couple for when we paint (as if that’s something we do every week) or when we are doing anything that can be a little messy and it won’t hurt me to stain them.
3. Sentimental pieces
In this post, I’m definitely not just talking about items that get no wear or are over worn, I’m also talking about pieces that you essentially want to keep but they don’t need to be in your closet. Things like wedding dresses, prom, bridesmaid and so on and so forth… These items are sentimental to you but they take up a lot of space. You aren’t going to wear them again but you definitely like to pull them out wanting to take a trip down memory lane. Solution? Store them away.
4. Too tight, too small, and plain uncomfortable
I’ve talked about this last year in my closet makeover post, but I wholeheartedly believe that keeping things in your closet for the hopes of being able to fit in it one day just doesn’t do the soul or head space any good. The same goes for clothes that are uncomfortable. Shoes that hurt and blister up your feet no matter how cute they are have to go! Shirts that are too tight and pants that are too low rise, need to make an exit! Don’t spend your day sucking it in or sucking it up… Again, when you feel good, you look good.
5. Simply not worn
Have any clothes with tags still on them? Girl, if it’s been over 6 months, you and I both know you’re not going to wear it. Do the right thing and let it go. The same goes for other clothing and shoes that you simply aren’t wearing anymore or that have passed the trendy mark. Those pieces are the ones that you know probably had a two year shelf life and you aren’t into that style anymore.
6. Bonus!…Accessories
With a show of hands, who has a bowl full or rings or necklaces that haven’t seen the light of day in a very long time? My hand is waaaay up there with you! Anyone who’s met me or knows me, knows that I’m an absolute sucker for rings and I’ve accumulated a ridiculous amount over the last few years. Well, I’d say that the majority of them are looking a little busted. Now when I’m talking about accessories, I’m not talking about your real silver or gold pieces. I’m talking about that costume jewelry that you buy at Forever21, H&M, etc… The metals that they use with the mixed with our body chemistry makes those items have a very short shelf life. The gold paint starts to fade and some of them even change colors. Those pieces need to go!
So do you have any weekend purging plans to get rid of the items you don’t need in your closet?
