Every proper room makeover begins with paint, right!? Picking the purest white with a slightly warm undertone was my first mission and I’m so glad that Canadian Tire’s Premier Paint came to the rescue! But first, let’s talk a little about the room & makeover inspiration.
Jude’s room has been somewhat of an eclectic disaster for quite some time and ever since we redid his closet, I caught the makeover bug and knew it was time for the rest of his room to get done. After a few nights of brainstorming, we came up with a “theme” for his room. As he’s getting older, one thing is clear, he will forever be obsessed with trains. Keeping this in mind, I knew I had to redo his room in a way that would be appealing to him but equally appealing to me as well. After all, I am the one who mostly cleans and takes care of it. ? Joking, but not really… So the inspiration for his room came from Back to the Future 3 and Toy Story 3— clearly coincidental that they are both the 3rd movies from their franchises. Trains, western, and tribal! Finally, a theme that combines my child’s wild side and love for trains, and that allows for all the cactuses! #ThisIsWhatDreamsAreMadeOf
First! Here’s a little reminder of what his eclectic disaster of a room looked like. #LeSigh … The bed moved around a gazillion times, toys and more toys everywhere, and clearly not enough trains for this dude.
Now, although I was pretty excited to tackle on my little dude’s room, there was one thing that had to be done that made me tear up a little. See the little black birds in the photo below? Well, they are from his first nursery that we removed and reapplied numerous times throughout the years, and this was officially the last time we’d see those sweet black birds on his wall again. Ripped and not sticking well anymore— it was their time to go. 
I need to make this disclaimer first. I actually love to paint. Yes, I know that may be odd to many, but I really enjoy transforming a room with a fresh coat of paint. So you’d imagine that I’ve painted a few rooms before and have used numerous different brands of paint. Well, with that being said, I was BEYOND impressed by the Premier Paint. We chose the Premier Infinity line in shade Arctic White in a Flat finish. It has Zero VOC, one coat color, superior coverage, stain-resistant, and easy to wash. When we moved into our place 4 years ago, it was a new development and only ever had one coat of paint. You can imagine over the years how much this place got scuffed up, but this paint covered up every bit of imperfections and stains in just one coat effortlessly.
I can’t help but laugh a little because in the photo’s you can’t see a difference from the white walls to the freshly painted ones, but rest assured, it’s totally different! The entire house was painted a white with blue undertones, that made our home cold and not very inviting, which also drove me a little crazy. I’ve always been someone who doesn’t like white paint with blue, pink, or grey undertones. I knew I needed to find a paint that was close to a true white but also very warm and inviting. The paint that we chose couldn’t be any more perfect!
One other thing I have to mention is that we did it all in a couple of hours and Jude slept in his room that same night. If you’re an Autism mom or you just have a child that doesn’t really like too much change when it comes to their sleep, then you’ll totally understand how this was a complete win!
Now I know a lot of people have been wondering and asking why am I painting Jude’s room a “boring” white and not a shade of color/blue. I’ve been asked this all too often since I shared my paint choice and I feel like I need to better explain instead of my generic response, “I LOVE WHITE!”. Although white paint makes my heart happy, that isn’t the only reason. Not only does my dude have Autism, but along with that diagnosis is Sensory Processing Disorder. See, unlike us typical folk, he struggles with sensory input. I wanted his walls to be like a blank canvas, where the artwork and items in his room brought in color and allowed him to be creative and playful, but at the same time be a space that would be calming and relaxing without too much sensory input.
